Bretty Boettler was charged with first-degree murder and Kevin Boettler and Johnny Barker were arrested as accessories in the murders of Smith and Moreland. The victims met the trio in a food store parking lot for a gun sale arranged on Craigslist.

Lopez claimed he was hired by Natalie Bollinger when he answered her ad on Craigslist titled “I want to put a hit on myself.” Lopez states that after many text messages an agreement was reached, and he picked her up and shot her in the head.

Otis Smith Jr. of Grand Rapids has been sentenced to life in prison, without parole, for being the triggerman in the killings outside a Walmart in Caledonia Township. Authorities say the murders stemmed from a deal to sell marijuana that was arranged online via Craigslist.
